Chapter 13

The little house in the hills no longer felt like home.

Her family had grown silent and grim, even the children seemingly caught in the melancholy mood that had settled over the rest of them. When they spoke, it was of the upcoming departure, of the plans that still had to be made and the duties that must be completed before they could leave.

Mya could not take another minute of it.

She told them she was going out, and without waiting for a reply stepped out into the early evening. The chill in the air seemed to welcome her. The sun had started to sink below the horizon, but it was not yet dark, the last light spilling out from under the low-hanging clouds and sliding down the slope. She looked up at the first stars appearing along the eastern edge of the sky, and felt something in her chest loosen and settle. Whatever happened, she thought, eyes fixed on the dim, far away lights, however far from home her journey led, she would still be looking upon those same stars. It was a comfort, to think such things.

Her feet took her up the path that wound along the hillside and out of the valley. She breathed deeply of the scent of heather. She’d walked a long while but did not feel tired. Her eyes wanted to take in every sight, her nose every scent.

“It is a beautiful night for a walk,” Kayden's voice said suddenly beside her.

Mya, startled, spun to look at him. “What are you doing here?” she demanded.

He smiled at her, the quirk of his mouth apologetic. “I’ve come to offer my most sincere apologies for my behavior toward you at the market.”

“There’s no need for you to apologize.” Mya looked away from him, shoulders pulling in closer on themselves. “I know why you had to do it.”

“And yet,” Kayden answered. “I regret it.”

She lifted her head, turning her gaze back to him. In the fading light, his eyes were very dark.

“I met Lachlan,” she said. “I’m glad you took precautions.”

It was Kayden's turn to tense, concern sliding across his expression. “You met him? When? What did he say to you?”

“What he came to threaten me, was to stay away from you lest I darkly attempt to reel you in with my womanly arts.” She shook her head. “In truth? I would rather not risk his wrath. You have said what you came to say, now go home before you are found here with me. And we’re both in trouble.”

“He frightened you,” Kayden said, the words coming out sounding much like a growl.

“He threatened my family,” Mya said. “It is that, not fear, that urges me do as he wishes. I will not be party to something that could harm those I care for.”

“No,” Kayden said. “Of course not.” He turned half away from her, as though he would leave, and then back again, obviously unable to make up his mind as to what measures to take against his cousin's threat.
